Obituary for Larry Doyle Powers

Larry Doyle Powers, a longtime resident of Hollis Oklahoma, left this earth December 15, 2023, at Magnolia Nursing Home and Therapy Center in Altus Oklahoma on December 15, 2023.

On August 9, 1940, in Harmon County, Oklahoma on the family farm of Andrew and Bertha Jewell, Castleman Powers, Larry Doyle Powers entered this world. Larry was raised and educated in the Harmon County area and attended school at Arnett . While growing up on the family farm, Larry developed a deep love and passion for horses, farming and ranching. Larry had a great passion for baseball. Larry was an incredibly gifted shortstop and while in high school, Arnett won back-to-back state championships in baseball and basketball. Larry played on the Mangum Legion baseball team in the years 55 and 56 when the team made it to the national sectionals. He also played on the Pampa Oilers sandlot baseball team. Later on Larry would have the honor of coaching fundamentals at the Eddie Fisher baseball camp in Warren, OK. Following high school, Larry attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, where he continued to play baseball. Larry graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in education and went on to obtain a master's degree in education and administration. Larry was a lifelong educator, administrator, and coach. He started his teaching career at Roosevelt before moving home to teach and serve as principal at his alumni of Arnett where he also served as coach for baseball and basketball, then moved on to Hydro, OK. When the position of principal became open again at Arnett Larry jumped at the opportunity. He returned to Arnett where he had always been passionate about educating the children of Southwest Oklahoma. Larry would remain at Arnett until it closed. From there Larry took a position as principal at Martha Public Schools until its closing, this was his last teaching assignment before retirement. Larry loved teaching and had an incredible knack for learning and knowing which students needed a stern look or a friendly smile. After retirement Larry taught at correctional facilities in Childress and Sayre. On December 4, 1987, in Childress, Texas Larry married Linda Ann Lee. When Larry wasn't working he loved to spend time driving around the country roads, ride his horses, and attend ballgames and rodeos. But the thing that gave Larry the most joy was spending time with his beloved family. Larry was a believer in Jesus Christ and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hollis. Larry leaves a legacy of love, education, and devotion to his family.

Larry was preceded in death by his Father, Andrew Powers; Mother, Bertha Jewell (Castleman) Powers and a baby sister, Doris Elaine.
